Public Schools Facilities Element Update for the Hillsborough County Comprehensive Plan

Overview

Planning Commission staff is proposing a publicly initiated text amendment to update the Public Schools Facilities Element (Section) of the Unincorporated Hillsborough County Comprehensive Plan. This section is considered an optional section of the Comprehensive Plan per Florida State Statutes Chapter 163.3177.

A virtual public meeting was held on March 28, 2024 at noon. Planning Commission staff provided a summary of the Public Schools Facilities Element update and answered questions from the public. Staff from Hillsborough County Public Schools was also in attendance.

The Public Schools Facilities section of the Comprehensive Plan provides a framework for coordination of long-range public school facilities planning processes and procedures between Hillsborough County and the Hillsborough County School Board.

This effort was deemed to be needed as this section, last revised in 2016, requires amendments to align with recent developments in state legislation and the revision of the Interlocal Agreement for School Facilities Planning, Siting, and Concurrency between Unincorporated Hillsborough County, the School District and Planning Commission.

No. The Public Schools Facilities section is a long-range policy and intergovernmental coordination tool and does not allocate funding.

No. The Public Schools Facilities section update does not affect school boundaries and does not discuss or address curriculum requirements. Establishment of and adjustments to school boundaries, as well as curriculum requirements, are determined by the Hillsborough County School Board.
