The National Integrated Drought Information System lists parts of Hillsborough County experiencing drought conditions this season. Like all rivers, the Hillsborough River depends on regular flows of freshwater to maintain its habitats and ecosystems. With a growing population, it is important the area conserve potable water resources. Potable water conserved is water that does not have to leave its natural environment.

Governments and regional agencies like the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) are responsible for maintaining adequate water resources for both people and the environment. To that end, SWFWMD provides cooperative funding to local governments to aid in water conservation projects. It also provides funding for projects that reduce the water demands of agriculture. Among these programs is WISE (Water Incentive Supporting Efficiency), providing grants for water conservation projects. Many non-agricultural water users are eligible for WISE, such as commercial properties, hotels, apartment complexes, HOAs, condominium associations, and golf courses.

SWFWMD also promotes the Florida Water Star program, a water conservation certification program for homes and commercial developments. Standards and guidelines for water efficiency for indoor fixtures and appliances, landscape design, and irrigation systems are included. Local jurisdictions are adopting ordinances requiring water conservation standards such as Florida Water Star for new development. Continued efforts are necessary for the growing Tampa Bay area to ensure adequate water supply for both people and habitats like the Hillsborough River.
