We are excited to share some highlights from the recent Annual Awards hosted by the Sun Coast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). The event took place on January 17 at the Grand Central Brewhouse in St. Pete and celebrated exceptional planning projects, initiatives, and individuals who have made a significant positive impact on our local community.

Beth Alden, the former Hillsborough TPO Executive Director, received one of the prestigious Distinguished Service Awards. This award recognizes individuals whose contributions have had a lasting impact on the planning profession. Having lent her expertise to organizations like Plan Hillsborough, Tampa Downtown Partnership, and various Tampa-based entities, Beth’s leadership has been instrumental in spearheading award-winning planning studies.

From initiatives like Imagine 2040 to the comprehensive Brandon East-West Corridors study, Beth’s approach has always been characterized by innovation and collaboration. Under her guidance, the TPO worked hand-in-hand with the Planning Commission to tackle the intricate relationship between land use and transportation issues. Her leadership had regional influence through the Sun Coast Transportation Planning Alliance. Her efforts in advancing Vision Zero goals have not only made Tampa a safer place but also inspired innovative educational endeavors like the annual Walk of Silence to commemorate World Day of Remembrance.

Cheers to planning excellence and to the incredible planners who make our Sun Coast Section shine!Â
