Marking the start of the new year, the January TPO Board meeting entertained a robust agenda full of exciting announcements and insightful discussions. At the start of the meeting, public comments were received regarding the pending installation of a barrier wall along the eastern boundary of Robles Park adjacent to I-275. While it is understood that the existing design will benefit the neighborhood, some residents requested consideration of an additional barrier of trees. To mediate this issue, Chair Myers set time to discuss the issue during next month’s meeting.

After receiving comments and committee reports, the Board approved a TIP Amendment which will add a northbound and southbound auxiliary lane on I-75 from the Tampa Bypass Canal to Fowler Avenue as well as widen bridges over the Tampa Bypass Canal, Harney Road, and replace the bridge over US 301. The addition of these lanes will allow drivers to more easily merge into exit ramps and into the interstate from on-ramps. For more details, interested parties are encouraged to visit the project page.

The Gulf Coast Safe Streets Summit (GCSSS) Interlocal Funding Agreement was also approved by the Board. This funding agreement will allow the Hillsborough TPO to receive funds from a partner TPO to cover the expenses for hosting the 2024 GCSSS. Be sure to stay tuned for updates on this exciting event!

Following approval of the action items, FDOT provided an update on their Truck Analysis. Many Board members expressed their appreciation for the analysis as it provided a great level of insight into the local freight needs through traffic count data. Notably, the analysis was highlighted for its relevance to the anticipated doubling of cargo intake at Port Tampa Bay. Ensuring that these goods get to their destination safely and efficiently will be an important topic for the TPO to consider.

The TPO also announced its upcoming launch of the Access 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) Survey. This survey will give community members an opportunity to provide their input on the future transportation plans and priorities. Please visit our Access 2050 website to learn more about what the LRTP is and how you can participate in the survey. Your voice is the key!
