May’s TPO Board meeting began with a presentation on the Interstate Wrong-Way Detection System Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Amendment. Several Board members expressed strong support for the amendment, citing the life-saving potential of the technology. One suggestion was to include public education on the signage used in these systems. Additionally, a question was raised about whether the systems are implemented in a standardized manner to avoid driver confusion.
FDOT Secretary Justin Hall confirmed that public education efforts are underway with community groups and that the systems are being implemented consistently across the state. Board members also inquired about whether law enforcement is alerted when a wrong-way driver is detected. It was confirmed that law enforcement is notified, and other drivers on the road are also alerted so they can take precautions. Following the discussion, the Board voted to approve the TIP Amendment.
Next, the Board approved an amendment to the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP). Before the vote, TPO staff clarified that the additional funds being included are carryover funds from a previous UPWP cycle, not a reassignment of existing funding.
