Hey there, road warriors and red-light regulars! Big things are in motion and we mean that quite literally. As part of the work going into the 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), the Smart Cities category of projects came out on top. That’s right, it ranked highest among all project categories (smart moves, right?).
So what does that mean for you? Well, in partnership with our local jurisdictions, our team is diving into ways to upgrade and replace old signals, install new systems, and make traffic smoother and safer. Think of it as giving your daily commute a tech-savvy makeover.
We’re not just picking signals at random. We’re looking at data like:
- Age of the current structures and equipment
- Where better signal coordination could make corridors flow like a dream
- Where we might need emergency power or help with flooding recovery
- Intersections that have safety concerns
- And other useful info
With support from Surface Transportation Block Grant Funding (prioritized by the TPO Board), these high-ranking smart projects could soon shift from plans to pavement. We anticipate the Traffic Signal Prioritization study to roll over the finish line in December 2025.
So next time you’re stopped at a red light, just know: we’re working on it.
