The Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission, in coordination with the City of Tampa Planning Department, is charting a course for the future of Tampa’s coastal areas. We are updating the Tampa Comprehensive Plan Coastal Management Section, looking ahead to 2045. This update aims to modernize and enhance the Coastal Management Section, ensuring our coastal policies are robust and forward-thinking.

What’s New?

The updated Coastal Management Section introduces three goals and five objectives, addressing critical areas such as:

  • 🌿 Living Marine Resources
  • 🏖️ Beaches and Shorelines
  • 🛡️ Hazard Mitigation
  • 🌍 Climate Change and Resiliency
  • 🌀 Hurricane Evacuation and Shelter
  • ⚓ Coastal Uses, Marinas, Dredge & Fill

Some policies related to development in areas susceptible to coastal storms will be moved to the Future Land Use Section, while others related to capital improvements will transition to the Capital Improvement Section.

Why You Should Care

This update isn’t just about policies—it’s about protecting and enhancing Tampa’s stunning coastal environments, such as:

  • Marine and estuarine water bodies
  • Shorelines and coastal barriers
  • Living marine resources and marine wetlands
  • Water-dependent facilities and public access to beaches

We aim to respect and conserve these precious areas for the enjoyment of residents for generations to come.
