We are excited to announce that the Hillsborough TPO, in collaboration with the University of Central Florida, has been awarded a $2.5 million Safe Streets for All Grant! This fantastic news marks a significant step towards making our roads safer for everyone. The Tampa Bay Arterial Signal Timing and Speed Management Planning project is all about finding cost-effective ways to reduce crashes and fatalities on local High Injury Network (HIN) corridors. These roads have a high number of severe injuries and fatalities, and we’re determined to change that.Â
One major factor in crash severity is vehicle speed. While we know how long it takes to travel specific road segments, pinpointing exact speeds between intersections—where many serious crashes happen—remains challenging. This study aims to tackle that by analyzing data, identifying low-cost, quick-to-implement safety improvements, testing these tools in a demo corridor and evaluating the results thoroughly. Our initiative is focused on enhancing road safety, particularly in under served communities. If successful, this project could become a model for similar efforts statewide and even beyond.Â
Here’s to safer streets and a brighter future for all!
