As the year comes to a close, the Hillsborough River remains a vital part of our community and a primary focus for local and regional planning. This year, several projects have highlighted the need to protect the river while also improving access and resilience.
Recent planning and investment have aimed to help people connect with the river in ways that protect the environment. The Riverwalk BUILD West project, located along the Hillsborough River, will enhance pedestrian and bicycle access to the west side of the River and the water’s edge, incorporating thoughtful design to protect the riverfront. This project allows residents and visitors to enjoy the river, maintain natural buffers, and protect the shoreline through the installation of living shorelines as part of the project.
Better data and teamwork have also helped guide the planning process. Ongoing studies of the watershed and nutrients flowing into the Hillsborough River are providing planners with a clearer picture of how stormwater and water quality issues impact the river. Utilizing this science helps make planning, stormwater management rules, and land use decisions more robust.
Working with the community and different agencies has stayed at the heart of efforts to protect the river. The Hillsborough Interlocal Planning Board and Technical Advisory Council heard from scientists, the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department, and other groups about developing, conserving, and monitoring the river corridor. These partnerships ensure that planning decisions align with both environmental goals and community values across all three jurisdictions.
Unincorporated Hillsborough County, as well as the Cities of Tampa and Temple Terrace, have also maintained conservation, floodplain management, and riverfront park development as top priorities. By preserving land adjacent to the river, protecting wetlands, and steering development away from flood-prone areas, these efforts help reduce flood risks and maintain the health of the river system.
Looking ahead to next year, the Hillsborough River reminds us that good planning means thinking ahead and caring for what we have. By working together, utilizing data to inform decisions, and designing carefully, we can safeguard and maintain this important resource for future generations.
