On March 12th, the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization Board will consider two amendments to the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) that could enhance public transit infrastructure and traffic technology in Hillsborough County. These proposed amendments include the HART Maintenance Site Remediation and Modernization Phase 1 and the Hillsborough County Smart Traffic Network project, which would bring critical funding to support HART’s maintenance facility upgrades and the expansion of smart traffic technology along key roadways.

One proposed amendment would add the first phase of HART’s heavy maintenance facility modernization project to the TIP. HART recently secured a $23.4 million federal grant to fund essential site cleanup and upgrades at its maintenance facility. The improvements will help support a future fleet of 250 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, with plans to incorporate CNG and hydrogen-fueled vehicles in the future. The project, with a total cost of $29.2 million, includes stormwater improvements, a transit vehicle service lane, and security fencing. These enhancements will help ensure a more efficient and environmentally friendly transit system.

The second proposed amendment would add the Hillsborough County Smart Traffic Network project to the TIP. Hillsborough County recently received a $2.9 million federal grant to integrate smart traffic technology across 40 miles of arterial streets. This initiative, with a total project cost of $3.9 million, aims to improve traffic flow, enhance mobility, and prepare the county’s roadways for connected vehicle technology. Connected vehicle technology allows vehicles to communicate with infrastructure, other vehicles, and road users to improve safety, efficiency, and mobility. By leveraging advanced traffic management systems, the project will help optimize signals, reduce congestion, and create a more seamless and accessible transportation network.

If approved, these projects will bring significant benefits to Hillsborough County. The HART maintenance site modernization will enhance transit operations and pave the way for a cleaner, more efficient bus fleet. Meanwhile, the Smart Traffic Network will improve traffic conditions, making roadways safer and more efficient for all users. These TIP amendments represent crucial steps toward a more modern, connected, and sustainable transportation system for the community.

The public is invited to provide feedback on the amendment until 3 p.m. on March 11, 2025, through the following channels:
