On May 14, 2025, the TPO Board will consider amending the following Transportation Improvement Program project:

  • Interstate wrong-way detection system

If approved, this amendment will update the project scope and add approximately $152,000 in construction funding. The project aims to improve safety by installing a wrong-way detection system and enhancing signage and pavement markings at six interstate ramps along I-4, I-75, and I-275. FDOT’s implementation in Hillsborough County will feature forward- and rear-facing cameras, two sets of dynamic LED warning signs at each location, and technology that activates alerts to the Traffic Management Center (TMC) when a wrong-way vehicle is detected.

Between June 2023 and June 2024, there were 119 confirmed wrong-way driving incidents in Florida, highlighting the urgent need for stronger safety measures. With a total project cost of $2.12 million, this upgrade is designed to help prevent crashes and create a safer driving experience on our interstates.

The public is invited to provide feedback on the amendment until 3 p.m. on May 13, 2025, through the following channels:
