We’ve got some exciting updates coming your way regarding our local traffic scene, courtesy of the Hillsborough Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). So, here’s the scoop: remember how the TPO last updated their vehicular counts back in 2020? Well, with the wild changes in travel patterns post-pandemic and the undeniable surge in traffic, it was high time for a refresh.
To tackle this task, the TPO teamed up with our friends over at Hillsborough County and the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, and Plant City. Together, they identified a whopping 440 locations to include in the counting program. The TPO and the City of Tampa even inked an interlocal agreement to crank up the counts in the City and ramp up report production. Teamwork makes the (traffic) dream work.
Remember those High Injury Network (HIN) corridors we’ve been eyeing as part of the Vision Zero Action Plan? Yeah, those have been added to the count locations, too. Safety comes first, always.
Fast-forward to spring 2024. With the help of Benesch and their sub-consultants, the task of updating the counts, crunching the numbers for Level of Service (LOS), and putting the final report together is done. All this hard work will be presented to the TPO committees and Board in June 2024. All the count locations have been mapped, and video equipment has been deployed to capture and quantify.
