BOO! Halloween is just around the corner, and whether you’re headed out for a night of trick-or-treating, a spooky party, or just running errands, the roads can get a little more chaotic. With costumes, pumpkins, and the excitement of the holiday, it’s easy to forget about safety—but Halloween can be one of the most dangerous nights for drivers and pedestrians alike. Here are a few tips to keep everyone safe while you enjoy the festivities:

For Drivers

  1. Slow Down in Residential Areas

On Halloween night, neighborhoods come alive with little Deadpools and Wolverines roaming the streets. Keep an eye out for excited kids darting across the road. Reducing your speed can give you more time to react if a costume-clad child suddenly appears!

  1. Stay Alert for Pedestrians

Kids are often focused on candy and costumes, not traffic. Watch out for pedestrians, especially around dusk, when visibility can be low. Be extra cautious at crosswalks, intersections, and when pulling out of or into driveways. If you see a group of people, particularly children, be prepared to stop!

  1. Avoid Distractions

It can be tempting to let your attention wander between the festive music, costumes, and maybe even a few extra treats. But distractions can lead to crashes. Stay focused on the road and keep your phone out of reach. Pull over safely if you need to check something on your phone or change the music. You wouldn’t want to miss that adorable Gojo or Minion crossing the street!

  1. Watch Out for Costumes

Some costumes can be tricky—dark colors or masks that impair vision can make it harder for kids to see you and for you to see them. Drive with extra caution in areas where kids are trick-or-treating and be aware that some costumes may not be as visible in the dark. Be mindful of your costume if you are planning one. Ensure it will not interfere with your ability to operate a vehicle and see.

  1. Plan Your Route

If you know your neighborhood gets busy with Halloween festivities, consider planning your route ahead of time to avoid heavily populated areas. You might even want to avoid streets known for big Halloween parties! If you are taking your little Pokémon and princesses out for some trick-or-treating fun, make sure to leave extra time so you aren’t rushing to get home.

  1. Be Extra Cautious After the Sun Goes Down

Once the sun sets, visibility decreases significantly, making it even more important to watch for children and families. Remember to turn on your headlights early and stay extra vigilant as you drive.

  1. Designate a Driver if You’re Partying

If you plan on enjoying Halloween festivities with friends, make sure to arrange for a designated driver or use a rideshare service. Nobody wants a spooky surprise like a DUI or crash to ruin the night!

  1. Be Mindful of Halloween Decorations

With all the spooky decorations adorning houses, it’s easy to get distracted. While they can be fun to look at, stay focused on the road. Decorations can also obscure visibility and create hazards—so be extra cautious around homes with elaborate setups.

For Pedestrians

  1. Be Seen
Put reflective items into your costume or on you. Carry glow sticks and flashlights. This goes for kids and adults.
  1. Follow the Rules of the Road
Follow the rules of being a pedestrian and obey the signs and signals. If possible, walk on the sidewalk and cross the street using crosswalks, intersections, and/or corners. Look for cars, scooters, and e-bikes in all directions, even the ones turning left or right.
  1. Travel in a Pack
Hang with your friends and make a plan to get everyone home safely. Besides, Halloween is way more fun with a group of friends, and the posse is easier for motorists to spot. Don’t walk alone.
  1. Know the Area
Stay in familiar places. Stick to neighborhoods you and your family know. Unknown areas may present hazards or confusion, particularly at night. Plan your route for well-lit areas.
  1. Avoid Distractions
Being a distracted walker can not only result in a great video for social media (blooper reel) but could also end badly. If you are going to take pictures, stop moving. Don’t text and walk. Keep pets close and under control.

Halloween is a time for fun, laughter, and a little bit of fright, but safety should never be an afterthought. Following these simple tips can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone. So, grab your candy, put on your favorite costume, and be safe out there!

Have a fantastic, safe Halloween, and enjoy the spooky season!
