Who hasn’t gotten stuck on I-4 between Orlando and Tampa? If you’ve lived here for any amount of time, you likely have. Imagine leaving that car behind and riding the rails from Tampa to Orlando and or possibly Cape Canaveral and then on to a South Florida city like Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. Think of the travel possibilities. Well, the Sun Coast Transportation Planning Alliance (SCTPA) and the Central Florida MPO Alliance (CFMPOA) are doing both. On June 14, these two organizations had a meeting and unanimously adopted a joint resolution addressing the critical need for expanding passenger rail service along the I-4 corridor.
Why is this important? Central Florida is growing rapidly, and with that growth comes increased traffic congestion and safety concerns on I-4. The new resolution recognizes the vital role that expanded passenger rail service can play in alleviating these pressures. It highlights the need for various rail options, including the higher-speed Brightline service and more frequent Amtrak services, to connect our bustling region more effectively.
Here’s a closer look at the plan:
- Brightline Rail Service: Imagine zipping between Tampa Bay and the Orlando Metro area, with future connections to the Space Coast and Southeast Florida. This higher-speed rail service promises a fast, efficient way to travel across our region.
- Amtrak Services: More frequent and new Amtrak routes between Tampa Bay and metro Orlando, extending to other parts of the United States, will help meet the growing travel demands. This means more options for long-distance travel without the hassle of driving.
The resolution emphasizes that Brightline and Amtrak offer different service options for distinct travel markets and price points. Rather than competing, these services will complement each other, providing diverse options for connecting people to jobs, education, and other destinations.
To make this vision a reality, the SCTPA and CFMPOA are calling on the State of Florida and other stakeholders to work together to expand our transit and transportation options. Through regional collaboration and dedicated work programs, we can create a more connected, efficient, and safe transportation network for everyone.
