The effects of climate change in Florida are multifaceted, encompassing rising sea levels, intensified hurricanes, and altered ecosystems. As global temperatures continue to increase, polar ice caps and glaciers melt, causing seas to rise and inundate coastal regions. This phenomenon not only leads to erosion and loss of beaches but also poses risks to infrastructure, freshwater resources, and ecosystems.

Florida is increasingly susceptible to extreme weather events, particularly hurricanes. Warmer ocean temperatures provide more energy to fuel hurricanes, resulting in stronger and more frequent storms. These hurricanes bring destructive winds, storm surges, and heavy rainfall, leading to flooding, property damage, and loss of life. The frequency and intensity of hurricanes are expected to rise in the coming decades.

In addition to directly impacting human communities, climate change disrupts Florida’s diverse ecosystems. Wetlands, mangroves, and coral reefs, which provide critical habitat for numerous species and serve as natural buffers against storms, are facing degradation and loss due to rising temperatures, ocean acidification, and habitat destruction. This ecological disruption not only threatens biodiversity but also undermines the resilience of Florida’s coastal areas.

Addressing the effects of climate change in Florida requires concerted efforts at the local, state, and national levels. Adaptation strategies, including coastal management, infrastructure upgrades, and ecosystem restoration, are essential for building resilience and protecting vulnerable communities and ecosystems in a changing climate. Plan Hillsborough is at the forefront of addressing these issues. Plan Hillsborough made Tampa and Hillsborough County one of the first areas of Florida to study sea level rise locally and complete a Vulnerability Study. These efforts led to the incorporation of comprehensive plan policies to address the risks of climate change. Plan Hillsborough continues this effort by participating in a project to update the countywide vulnerability study.

Climate change in Florida presents profound challenges to the economy, environment, and society. Plan Hillsborough is proactive in tackling these issues through critical studies and policy adjustments.
